Work in Progress 2025

In May 2025, IRC4HR sponsored the second convening of Work in Progress, a lab bringing together 29 entrepreneurs, investors, and thought leaders in San Francisco to explore bold new possibilities for the evolution of work.

Attendees participated in one of three breakout sessions designed to move beyond surface-level workplace debates toward more fundamental questions about work’s future:

  • Lifelong Learning and Mentorship
  • Modern Work Status / The Multi-Organizational Worker
  • Thriving Together: Cognition, Collaboration, and Productivity Infrastructure

Each session

  • Combined pre-reading materials with facilitated discussions to generate new frameworks and terminology for emerging workplace dynamics.
  • Consisted of a series of muses and challenges to help solve future-facing scenarios.
  • Concluded with the formulation of “What If, Why Not” questions based on collective insights.

Key questions that arose during the day:

  • How do we give workers agency over their development and the tools for self-discovery and career navigation?
  • How do workers move beyond a single-employer identity to a curated collection of roles that cater to their individual strengths and needs?
  • What if we put worker agency at the center of the work conversation?

See the accompanying report for details and insights from the day’s sessions.

We hope that the ideas generated from the Work in Progress convening and accompanying report inspire leaders across functions and sectors to not only explore what is possible but to collaborate and bring this vision to life in the years ahead.
